it's been a while...much has happened...
in the almost three months since I posted last I: got fired (as of the end of June), went on tons of interviews, applied to grad school, found another job (woohoo), went on another cruise (it was rad), and my boss is being investigated by the special victim's unit! the last one is the only one I have more info on right now, it's a great read, VERY informative.

my kid is okay...
the student I mentioned in this post a few weeks ago came back to school last week and seems fine. apparently it was meningitis, but it was an odd strain that the docs didn't recognize right away, he said the meds almost shut his kidneys down before they realized it. he seems to be in really good spirits, and his speech has improved greatly since I saw him in the hospital. it was good to see him back with his friends and being the goofy kid that I know and love.

this sucks... one of my kids is in the hospital. he's not technically mine anymore, I had him in 10th & 11th and now he's a senior, but he's still one that I am closer to. he felt sick Monday before last and took some Benedryl and laid down to take a nap, when he woke up his speech was slurred and he was vomiting. I guess this got worse as the week wore on and they took him to the hospital Friday. they've run all kinds of tests and ruled out stroke, meningitis and herpes, he has to wait for 10 or 11 more days for more tests to come back but at this point they don't know what is wrong with him. this just sucks, he's only 17 and he's one of those funny smart-ass kids who is always cutting up and stuff, it was really difficult to see him in there, his speech is getting better, I could barely understand him on the phone Wednesday but last night it was easier, I just hope he's better and out of there soon.

the joy of home ownership vol. 3... I took a bath in my kitchen sink this morning...at least I have hot water now. the new drains and sewer lines are in under the house and the plumber replaced all the gas lines too for $600, I'm told this is an amazing price. the insurance company sent out a leak detection guy yesterday and he said the pipes were old and corroded, I'm afraid that means that insurance won't pay so I may end up suing the home inspector since two licensed plumbers have now told me that he should have caught this. the guy did comment on the job that my plumber is doing tho, he said he inspects plumbing systems all day long and it looks like the one he is putting in is a really good job, I mentioned the price and he was shocked at what a deal I got and even asked Kasey (the plumber) for cards so he can refer him to people when he is booked. the washer/dryer was hooked up last night and we did a few loads, however the washer insisted on dancing around the laundry room so much so that it crashed into the wall behind the dryer and ripped the vent hose in half, Sears says it sounds like they didn't remove the shipping bolts when they delivered it and I have to crawl back there and do it, um, isn't that what I paid $60 for? I remember when Sears was the best in the business but they have gone downhill fast, maybe they watered down the gene pool when they bought K-mart. another insurance adjuster is coming today to look at the floor in the bathroom and then I hope to have an actual shower there tonight or tomorrow, the rest of the wall came down where the bathroom sink is going to go and I think I'm going to add a pocket door since the space is so small. I am starting to get excited about the remodel, I am still a little shocked that it's actually happening at all! the bill stands at $7000 and the electrician comes today, oy!

off the rails, two posts in one day... ok, so you already know the saga about the house, let me tell you about the rest of my day so far. I had to run home during my planning period/lunch to meet the guy who did my home inspection to see if he could do anything about the sewer rupture, he was an asshole and was offended that I would even suggest that he missed it on the inspection; he refused to even call his insurance company, I'm now glad I offended him. while I was there I got a notice in the mail from the DMV telling me that the payment I made last month for my truck registration (Brent's truck) had been returned by the bank and the tags were now revoked! I had to call and see what was happening, apparently I left off the last digit of my checking account number when I paid online, I'm stupid that way sometimes, but even after they figured out that it was an error and not actual insufficient funds they would not accept payment electronically, I had to go to the DMV with a cashier's check or money order, luckily I was able to handle it at AAA, but not before some asshole, asshole in a Scion xB no less, BACKED INTO ME at the bank! luckily he hit the back corner where the plastic panels are and it didn't do any damage to me, although it did mess up his bumper a little, damn, my car can take a punch! so, anyway, I called the school while in line at AAA and had a teacher cover the first few minutes of my 7th period until I made it back. my washer and dryer got delivered while I was out but they can't be hooked up because of the sewer crap so they are just sitting in my laundry room looking all pretty, I still have no bathroom and no hot water! my insurance company said they'd send someone out in a day or so to survey the damage for a claim on the sewer rupture. all in all though, I got a good enough deal on the house for it to still be worth it to replace this out of my pocket, I just hope I don't have to. check back tomorrow, when I fully expect the heavens to open and for God himself to descend and bitch-slap me, I dunno what else can happen!

the joy of home ownership vol. 2... it's been a long week, and it's only Monday! last Wednesday I had a plumber come to give me an estimate on installing a water line for my refrigerator's ice maker, he crawled under the house and returned to inform me that my sewer line was ruptured. after further inspection he determined that the entire system under the house had ruptured and my toilet and tub was actually draining into the crawl space. this, as you may know, is not good. he is now in the process of replacing the system, which has also entailed pulling the bathroom floor to access the pipes, since everything is open/gone, I am taking the opportunity to do a little remodeling and will be taking out a small closet to make the bathroom bigger. I have filed a claim with my insurance company and I sincerely hope they pay something because so far the bill is a little over $6000.

to cut, or to really cut... my hair is getting shaggy, which would be cute if it got all shaggy like that which is trendy right now, but it doesn't, it just gets big. I am now torn between shearing it down to nothing, (I used to do this once a year or so but I haven't since 2007), or just getting a regular cut. what say you?

here we go again... I joined Weight Watchers again yesterday, hopefully for the last time! miraculously, having not been to a meeting since September, and despite going on a seven-day cruise and eating everything in sight, I have actually lost 1.2 lbs since my last weigh in, I was shocked! I'll continue to post my actual weight and stuff on my weight filter, if you're not on there, let me know and I can add you.

the joy of home ownership vol. 1... the tub in the new house was clogged when I bought it so after I poured some Drano Foaming Pipe Snake down it to no avail, I rented an actual pipe snake from Home Depot and got medieval on its ass. this worked for a short time, but as of yesterday the clog was back. for the last few days the water would collect as we showered and be around mid-shin by the time we were through and then take about 3 hours to drain, however, when I got home yesterday around 3:30 p.m., the water from my 6:15 a.m. shower sat in the tub undrained. I pulled the overflow pipe from the front of the tub through the access panel in the laundry room and the water started pouring out under the house! this told me that the clog was right there at the base of the tub. Brent bought some drain opener stuff and poured it down there, the stuff is basically pure sulfuric acid and smelled disgusting, it also caused black sludge to come up through the overflow, but didn't move the water at all. so, by this time it was almost midnight and I had half a bathtub full of sulfuric acid laced water and black sludge. I called Mr. Rooter, whose website claims that they never charge extra for overtime or nights and weekends, but I was informed that it would cost me $95 just to have them show up! I then called Roto Rooter and got a charge of $40, but at least it was less. long story short, $202.50 later, my bathtub now drains.

this will be short... I'm updating from the ship and paying .55 cents per minute so this will be short. we got the house about 80% complete before dumping all of our stuff in it and the garage and taking off to make the cruise, said cruise almost didn't happen for me since I forgot my birth certificate and had to go all the way back to the house to get it, but I made it back in time! so far the cruise is good, they upgraded us from an inside cabin to a balcony room so we're enjoying that, we have a small deck with two chairs and it looks right onto the water! we'll be in Cabo San Lucas tomorrow, Mazetlan on Wednesday, Puerta Vallarta on Friday, and then two days at sea before heading back home. I'll most likely update this once or twice more, and there is a card reader on the computer so I might upload a photo or two!
EDIT: sorry I didn't post more, the trip was good, photos on flickr soon.

thoughts on 37.... my 37th year was a pretty interesting one. I remember not so very long ago when the thought of being 37 would send shivers down my spine, I never wanted to be "old" and in my mind 37 was beyond old! looking back on it now I think the root of the problem may have been with where my life was at that time, I now realize that it was more that I didn't want to be 37, single, working a crap job, driving a crap car and living in a crap house/apt. luckily, I'm not! my 37th year turned out to be a fruitful one with the purchase of my first house a few weeks before my birthday, and over the past several years I have managed to pull my life into order and for the first time, in nearly my entire life, I feel like I am doing what I am meant to do. I love my job, it has never felt like work, I'm in a good relationship, I have a decent car and now a home, I feel incredibly blessed and lucky, and to top everything off my 7th period threw me a surprise birthday party yesterday, talk about feeling the love! so I don't really worry as much about the number anymore, 38, fine! 39, great! 40! bring it on!
